What is Christmas?

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, I pray that God’s eternal peace rests upon you as you enter a joyful holiday season.  It has always amazed me that Christmas is able to carry such a magical sensation as it approaches.  Personally, I find that one of the ways I am able to enjoy Christmas is by reminiscing the past Christmases that were spent with family.  The memories of the times we have shared with the loved ones of the present and past are part of what make Christmas so magical.

In addition to the memories, there are many other variables for this time of the year which contribute to the anticipation of the Holidays.  Some of the variables may include, but are not limited to, the cold weather, mistletoe, Christmas lights, and so much more.  With all of this being said, it is with much excitement that I introduce the Advent Sermon Series to you for the next few weeks.  Upon deciding on a theme I was forced to stop and ask what the holiday season is all about.  Many people will associate a variety of different ideas and concepts when Christmas is discussed, so I took a few of those items and connected them with the true meaning of Christmas.

What is Christmas?  The search for this answer is what led me to this year’s Advent Series topic.  This question is very important for us to gaze upon, because the answers will vary, especially outside the church.  Many of us would probably suggest that Christmas is a time with family, friends, and church gathered together to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child.  However, we can also get wrapped up (no pun intended) in the holiday hype to the point that we start focusing on the worldly things instead of the spiritual. (i.e. I want more gifts, do we have enough decorations, what will my Christmas bonus be this year?)  It is my hope that our Wednesday and Sunday services will be able to bring us back to the reality of Christmas.  What is Christmas?  Christmas is Christ.

I hope to see you at our midweek soup suppers and services, as well as on Sunday mornings.  God bless you and your families as you focus on the Christmas Christ.

In His Service,

Pastor Jacob T. May
